Guernsey is the second-largest island in the Channel Islands, located 43 kilometres west of the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy. It is the largest island in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, which also includes Alderney, Herm, Jethou, Brecqhou and Sark and many small islets and rocks, and the bailiwick has a population of 63,950. The island has a land area of 62 square kilometres, is divided into ten parishes and has one town, Saint Peter Port. It was part of the Duchy of Normandy until 1204, when the Channel Islands remained loyal to the English crown, and it was occupied by Nazi Germany during the Second World War until its liberation on 9 May 1945, celebrated as Liberation Day. It is a self-governing dependency of the British Crown and is not part of the United Kingdom, whose government holds certain responsibilities for it.
