Barcs

Barcs is a town in Somogy County, in the Southern Transdanubia region of Hungary, on the Drava River where it forms the border with Croatia. First documented between 1389 and 1417 as part of the lordship of Segesd, with its castle mentioned from 1460, the town endured Ottoman occupation and later territorial changes before developing agricultural processing industries, including leather works, distilleries, and food production, after the First World War. It gained town status in 1979 through municipal mergers and is now the seat of Barcs District, surrounded by the Danube-Drava National Park. According to 2017 data its population was 10,667, predominantly Hungarian with Romani, Croat, and German minorities.
