Emod

Emod is a small town in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen county in northern Hungary, about 25 kilometers from the county capital Miskolc. It has been settled since the Hungarian Conquest period and was first recorded by an anonymous medieval notary during the reign of King Bela III; wine production became established there in the fourteenth century. A fire destroyed the town in 1882 and it was rebuilt, and it was downgraded from town to village status in 1872, a status that lasted until town rights were restored on August 19, 2001. Before the Second World War, Emod had a Jewish community of about 123 people at its peak, most of whom perished in the Holocaust.
