Mezokeresztes is a town in Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen county in northern Hungary, near Mezokovesd and Eger. King Ladislaus V granted the settlement market town status in the medieval period, and it is best known for the 1596 battle in which Ottoman sultan Mehmed III defeated Habsburg and Transylvanian forces, an engagement in which the sultan reportedly had to be dissuaded from fleeing the field partway through. The town prospered after the Ottoman period before declining, then saw oil resources discovered nearby in 1950 and developed through the 1980s; it received official town status on July 1, 2009. In 2015 the town had 3,818 residents across 74.26 square kilometers.
