Szekszard is a small city in southern Hungary and the capital of Tolna County, with a population of 29,889 at the 2022 census. By population it is the smallest county capital in Hungary, and by area the second smallest after Tatabanya. It sits where the Transdanubian Hills meet the Great Hungarian Plain, at the mouth of the Sio into the Danube floodplain, and was first documented in 1015; King Bela I founded a Benedictine monastery there in 1061. The city is known for wine production and is the birthplace of the poet Mihaly Babits.
