Husavik

Husavik is a town on the northeast coast of Iceland, in the Nordurthing municipality, whose name means bay of houses. According to the Landnamabok, it was the first place in Iceland settled by a Norseman, when the Swedish Viking Gardar Svavarsson wintered there around 870 and left servants behind to farm the land. With a population of roughly 2,485, the town's economy today rests on fishing, small industry and tourism, and it has become known as Iceland's premier whale watching destination because of the marine life in the surrounding Skjalfandi bay.
