Selfoss

Selfoss is the main town and administrative center of the Árborg municipality in southern Iceland, on the banks of the Ölfusá River about 50 kilometers southeast of Reykjavík along Route 1, and is the largest residential area in South Iceland. Its growth followed the 1891 construction of the first suspension bridge over the Ölfusá, which spurred settlement and commerce, and the town was incorporated as a municipality in 1946. As of 2025 Selfoss had a population of 10,420, more than double its roughly 4,500 residents in 2000. The town functions today as a center of commerce and small industry, benefiting from its proximity to Reykjavík while maintaining low unemployment and its own distinct identity.
