The Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea, between Great Britain and Ireland. Charles III holds the title Lord of Mann as head of state and is represented by a Lieutenant Governor, and the government of the United Kingdom is responsible for the island's military defence and represents it abroad, though the island keeps a separate international identity. People have lived on the island since before 6500 BC, the Manx language emerged as a branch of the Goidelic languages, Norsemen founded the Kingdom of the Isles in the ninth century, and the island came under the feudal lordship of the English Crown in 1399 and revested in the British Crown in 1765. Its capital is Douglas and its legislature is the Tynwald.
