Istria is the largest peninsula of the Adriatic Sea, divided among Croatia, Slovenia and a small corner of Italy. Its Mediterranean climate, olive groves, vineyards and historic coastal towns, many still bearing the architectural imprint of centuries of Venetian rule, have made it one of the Adriatic's most visited regions, while its twentieth-century history was marked by shifting borders and the postwar exodus of much of its Italian-speaking population to Italy.
