Amiternum

Amiternum was an ancient Sabine settlement, later a Roman city and bishopric, located in the Abruzzo region of central Italy about nine kilometers from L'Aquila. It was one of the chief settlements of the Sabine people before the Roman conquest of 293 BC, and is known as the birthplace of the historian Sallust in 86 BC. The city stood at the junction of four Roman roads, the Via Caecilia, the Via Claudia Nova and two branches of the Via Salaria, and its surviving remains include an amphitheater, a theater and Christian catacombs on the neighboring San Vittorino hillside.
