Brescia is an Italian comune and the capital of the province of Brescia in Lombardy, with about 202,000 inhabitants, which makes it the second most populous centre of the region after Milan. The Italian article traces its origins to about 1200 BC, when a population probably of Ligurians built a settlement there; under the Romans it became the Colonia Civica Augusta Brixia named by Augustus. In 1438 the Venetian Senate proclaimed it the lioness and worthy bride of the Lion and gave it the title Brixia fidelis Fidei et Iustitiae, which is carved on the front of the Palazzo della Loggia. The Teatro Grande, founded in 1664, is among its civic buildings.
