Caravaggio is an Italian comune of 16,594 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, in Lombardy, on the western Bergamo plain, and it includes the hamlets of Masano and Vidalengo. The town is famous for its sanctuary, begun in 1432 on the site of an apparition that happened that year and soon an important pilgrimage destination. In Roman times it was Caravagium, on the road that linked Mediolanum with Brixia, and its modern name first appears in a document of 962. The town is linked to the painter Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, whose parents came from there, and to Polidoro da Caravaggio, one of the most gifted pupils of Raphael.
