Compsa was an ancient city of the Hirpini people in southern Italy, situated near the sources of the Aufidus river on the boundary of Lucania, not far from Apulia, on a ridge about 609 meters above sea level. It was betrayed to Hannibal in 216 BC after the Roman defeat at Cannae, but was recaptured two years later. It was probably occupied by Sulla in 89 BC and was the site of the death of Titus Annius Milo in 48 BC.
