Cyllene was a seaport town of ancient Elis, situated 120 stadia from the city of Elis itself. Homer names it among the towns of the Epeians, and Dionysius Periegetes describes it as the port from which the Pelasgians sailed to Italy. Pausanias records that merchants from Aegina visited it in early times, and that it was the port from which exiled Messenians departed to found a colony in Italy or Sicily after the Second Messenian War.
