Forum Novum

Forum Novum was a Roman foundation in what is now the commune of Torri in Sabina, in the province of Rieti in Italy's Lazio region, that developed as a market center during the Roman Republic and had achieved the status of municipium by the early 1st century AD, appearing among the towns listed by Pliny the Elder. Markets continued to operate there into the 4th century, and after urban decline the site, later known as Vescovio, remained a regional focal point and became a bishopric in the 5th century, a title the Catholic Church still lists today as a titular see. Excavations by the British School at Rome beginning in 1997 have used geophysical survey to study the site.
