Gorizia

Gorizia is a town in the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in northeastern Italy, at the foot of the Julian Alps on the border with Slovenia, with 33,620 inhabitants. It serves as capital of the regional decentralization entity of Gorizia and functions as a local center of tourism, industry and commerce. Since 1947 Gorizia has been twinned with the Slovenian town of Nova Gorica on the opposite side of the border, a relationship rooted in the post-Second World War territorial dispute between Italy and Yugoslavia that fixed the current boundary in 1947, leaving the historic old town to Italy while newer development grew on the Yugoslav side; since May 2011 Gorizia, Nova Gorica and the Slovenian municipality of Sempeter-Vrtojba have been joined in a common cross border metropolitan zone.
