Velia

Velia was the Roman name for an ancient Greek city on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, founded around 538 to 535 BC by Greek settlers from Phocaea under the name Hyele, near what is now the village of Ascea in Italy's Province of Salerno. It flourished through the Roman period before gradually declining in the 1st century AD, and is best known as the home of the pre-Socratic Eleatic school of philosophy associated with Parmenides and Zeno of Elea.
