Venice

Venice is built across more than a hundred small islands in a lagoon on Italy's northeastern Adriatic coast, separated from the open sea by a chain of barrier islands and threaded by canals that serve as its streets. Its lagoon setting, shallow, marshy, and difficult to navigate without local knowledge, protected it from land invasion for centuries and shaped a city built on wooden pilings driven into the mud rather than solid bedrock.
