Karelia is a cultural region of Northern Europe of historical significance to Russia, Finland, and Sweden, divided between the Republic of Karelia and Leningrad Oblast in northwestern Russia and the South Karelia, North Karelia, and Kymenlaakso regions of Finland. Stretching from the White Sea coast to the Gulf of Finland, it contains the two largest lakes in Europe, Ladoga and Onega, amid its extensive lakes and forests.
