Trakai

Trakai is a city and lake resort in Lithuania, about 28 kilometers west of Vilnius, and is the administrative center of Trakai district municipality. First mentioned in 1337 and granted town rights in 1409, it was once the medieval capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and is home to Trakai Island Castle, built under Grand Duke Vytautas as a residence for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. The city has long been home to people of different nationalities, including Karaims, Tatars, Lithuanians, Russians, Jews and Poles, and as of the 2021 census had a population of 5,426 across an area of 11.5 square kilometers.
