Moldavia is a historical region and former principality of Eastern Europe, situated between the Eastern Carpathians and the Dniester River, which existed as an independent state and later an Ottoman vassal from the fourteenth century until it merged with Wallachia in 1859 to form the foundation of modern Romania. Positioned between the Hungarian, Polish, Ottoman, and Russian empires, its territory is today divided among Romania, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine.
