Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi is a town in the coastal region of Montenegro, at the western entrance to the Bay of Kotor and at the foot of Mount Orjen, serving as the administrative center of Herceg Novi Municipality with about 33,000 inhabitants. It was founded as a fortress in 1382 by Tvrtko I Kotromanic, King of Bosnia, and named for Saint Stephen, though the name did not stick and it became known instead as Novi, or Castelnuovo in Italian. The town was part of the Ottoman Empire from 1482 to 1687 and then of the Republic of Venice's Albania Veneta from 1687 to 1797; it was a Catholic bishopric and remains a Latin titular see as Novi. Despite being one of the youngest settlements on the Adriatic, Herceg Novi has passed through a long series of different rulers, leaving behind a blend of diverse and picturesque architectural styles.
