Ulcinj

Ulcinj is a town in the coastal region of Montenegro and the capital of Ulcinj Municipality, with an urban population of 11,488. Founded in the 5th century BC, it is one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast; the Romans captured it from the Illyrians in 163 BC, and it later passed to the Byzantine Empire, Serbian rule and the House of Balsha before the Republic of Venice took it in 1405 and used it as a base against piracy. The Ottomans conquered Ulcinj in 1571, after which it gradually became a Muslim-majority town, and Ottoman rule lasted more than three centuries until the town was ceded to the Principality of Montenegro in 1878. Today Ulcinj is a major tourist destination known for Velika Plaza beach, Lake Sas, Ada Bojana island and Ulcinj Castle, has 26 mosques in the town and surrounding countryside, and is the center of Montenegro's Albanian community.
