Groningen is the capital of Groningen province in the Netherlands and the dominant economic and cultural hub of the country's north, with a January 2025 population of about 244,807 making it the Netherlands' sixth-largest city. It gained city rights in 1245 and functioned almost as an independent city-state in the 15th century; roughly a quarter of its residents are students, drawn partly to the University of Groningen, the country's second-oldest university, founded in 1614.
