Schiedam

Schiedam is a municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, within the Rotterdam-The Hague metropolitan area, lying west of Rotterdam, east of Vlaardingen and south of Delft. It grew up around a dam on the Schie River, was founded around 1230 and granted city rights in 1275, and became known in the 18th and 19th centuries for jenever gin production, earning it the nickname Black Nazareth. Its historic center, built around canals, includes what is described as the tallest windmill in the world. As of January 2021 the town had a population of 79,279, estimated at 82,055 by 2026, across a total area of 19.86 square kilometers.
