Mylae (Thessaly)

Southern Europe

Mylae was a town and polis of Perrhaebia in ancient Thessaly. Livy described the battle for the town during the Third Macedonian War in 171 BCE, when the army of Perseus of Macedon, having already secured the surrender of Pythium, Azorus and Doliche and captured Cyretiae, advanced on Mylae; the well-fortified town withstood a three-day siege, and although the exhausted defenders repelled a stronger fourth-day assault at first, they were ultimately overwhelmed when the Macedonians breached the defences, entered the city and looted it before selling it back to the survivors.
