Jedwabne is a town in northeastern Poland, in Lomza County of Podlaskie Voivodeship, with a population of about 1,942 as of 2002. First documented in 1455, it received town status in 1736 and grew into a textile manufacturing center with a substantial Jewish community, numbering around 1,941 residents by 1900. On July 10, 1941, the town's Jews were forced into the town square and killed by Polish men supported by German troops, with many burned alive in a barn; estimates of the death toll range from 340 to about 2,000.
