Legnica is a city in southwestern Poland on the Kaczawa River in the central part of Lower Silesia, first mentioned in 1004 and site of the fierce Battle of Legnica against Mongol forces in 1241. It served as the seat of the Duchy of Legnica from 1248 to 1675, ruled by the Piast dynasty for roughly 700 years, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Legnica has had its seat there since 1992. As of 31 December 2021 the city had 97,300 inhabitants, and it functions as an economic, cultural and academic center of the region alongside Wroclaw, having become a major copper and nickel industrial center since the 1950s. Its Piast Castle is among the largest in Poland, and the city's architecture spans the medieval to the modern period.
