Baia Mare

Baia Mare is the capital of Maramures County in northwestern Romania, lying on the Sasar River in a valley between the Ignis and Gutin mountains near the borders with Hungary and Ukraine. First recorded in a 1328 document issued by Charles I of Hungary, it grew as a medieval center of gold and silver mining, and in the late nineteenth century it became home to the Nagybanya artists' colony, which introduced new painting techniques that influenced Hungarian and Romanian art. The city, whose 2021 population was about 108,759, is often described as one of Romania's greenest municipalities for its amount of green space per resident.
