Banska Bystrica is a city in central Slovakia on the Hron River, set in a valley ringed by the Low Tatras, the Velka Fatra, and the Kremnica Mountains. It was founded by German settlers invited by the Arpad rulers of Hungary over an earlier Slavic and Avar settlement, and in 1255 it received the privileges of a free royal town from King Bela IV and was resettled by Germans from Thuringia. It grew wealthy as a copper mining center, and its late medieval churches, mansions, and fortifications survive today; with about 76,000 residents it is the sixth largest municipality in Slovakia and serves as a regional capital and university city.
