Nova Gorica

Nova Gorica is a town in the Slovenian Littoral region of western Slovenia, on the border with Italy, and serves as the seat of the Gorizia statistical region. It had a population of 13,021 in 2023 across just 3.49 square kilometers, making it one of the most compact towns in Slovenia by area. Nova Gorica was built as a planned town starting in 1948 and formally established as an urban municipality in 1952, after the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty redrew the border between Yugoslavia and Italy and separated the region from the older town of Gorizia across the frontier. It was designated European Capital of Culture for 2025 jointly with neighboring Gorizia in Italy, described by the BBC as the first borderless Capital of Culture in Europe.
