Carthago Nova

Carthago Nova is the historical Roman name for the city of Cartagena in Spain, used from the Roman conquest until Byzantine rule in the 6th century. Founded as Qart Hadasht by the Carthaginian general Hasdrubal the Fair around 227 BC, it served as Carthage's principal stronghold in Hispania until the Roman general Scipio Africanus captured it in 209 BC, after which it prospered as a Roman city through silver and lead mining and gained a theatre and forum built under Augustus. Byzantine rulers renamed it Carthago Spartaria in the 6th century.
