Clunia was an ancient Roman city whose remains lie on the Alto de Castro, at more than 1,000 meters above sea level, between the villages of Peñalba de Castro and Coruña del Conde in the province of Burgos, Spain. It was one of the most important Roman cities in the northern half of Hispania, and from the 1st century BC served as the capital of a conventus iuridici, the Conventus Cluniensis, in the province of Hispania Tarraconensis. The city sat on the road linking Caesaraugusta (Zaragoza) with Asturica Augusta (Astorga). Clunia declined during the 3rd century and was largely abandoned by the Visigothic era; its name is a toponym of Arevacian origin.
