Empúries

Empúries, also known by its Spanish name Ampurias, was an ancient Greek city on the Mediterranean coast of Catalonia, Spain, founded in 575 BC by Greek colonists from Phocaea under the name Emporion, meaning trading place. It later became a Roman settlement, and the site today preserves remains of two adjoining ancient cities, Palaiapolis and Neapolis, along with extensive Roman era ruins. Empúries served as a major Greek trading colony on the Iberian Peninsula.
