Illiturgis

Illiturgis, also called Iliturgi, was an ancient city in Roman Spain on the road from Corduba to Castulo, originally sited near present-day Mengibar before being relocated near Andujar following its destruction; under Rome it also carried the name Forum Julium and belonged to the province of Hispania Baetica. During the Second Punic War the city switched allegiance from Rome to Carthage and executed Roman soldiers who had sought refuge within its walls, and in 206 BC the general Scipio Africanus stormed the city in retribution, destroying its buildings and inhabitants, an event that reportedly influenced neighboring Castulo to surrender and Astapa to choose mass suicide rather than face the same fate. Only an archaeological site with a Roman cistern survives today.
