Plasencia

Plasencia is a city in northern Caceres province, in the Extremadura region of Spain, founded in 1186 by King Alfonso VIII of Castile, whose Latin motto for the city, meaning to please God and men, gave it its name. The Diocese of Plasencia was established there in 1189, and the city remains its seat, with a walled historic center recognized for its cultural heritage and a cathedral among its notable monuments. With a population of about 40,132, Plasencia lies on the Jerte River before it joins the Alagon and holds two well known annual festivals, Martes Mayor and Holy Week.
