Puigcerda

Puigcerda is the capital of the Catalan comarca of Cerdanya, in Girona province, Catalonia, Spain, founded in 1178 by King Alfonso I of Aragon to replace Hix as the region's center and directly bordering the French town of Bourg-Madame. A rail link across the Pyrenees to France opened in 1929, and during the Spanish Civil War the town was notable for having a democratically elected Anarchist council. With a population of about 10,035, Puigcerda preserves Romanesque churches and other medieval structures dating from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries.
