Helsingborg

Helsingborg is Sweden's second largest city, in the region of Scania, on the Oresund strait just four kilometers from the Danish city of Helsingor, making it the closest point in Sweden to Denmark. Officially established in 1085, it grew into a major trading center and was strategically important during the period of Danish control over the strait, including the Sound Dues toll system introduced in 1429. During the Second World War, Helsingborg was a principal escape route when more than 7,200 Danish Jews were smuggled to safety across the Oresund in 1943. With a population of about 151,404 in 2024, it remains a regional hub for trade and transport and hosts the international headquarters of IKEA.
