Lviv is the fifth-largest city in Ukraine, and the largest city in the western part of the country, with a population of 723,403. It serves as the administrative centre of Lviv Oblast and Lviv Raion and is one of the main cultural centres of Ukraine. The city was named after Leo I of Galicia, the eldest son of Daniel, King of Ruthenia, and has had several names across its history.
