Nikonion

Nikonion was an ancient Greek city founded by colonists from Miletus in the second half of the sixth century BC, on the eastern bank of the Dniester estuary near the modern village of Roksolany in Odesa Oblast, Ukraine. As a trading post it dealt with nomadic tribes of the steppe and drew on the rich fishing of the estuary, with stone construction beginning in the fifth century BC. The city was destroyed in the third or second century BC, possibly by Macedonian forces, grew again in the first century BC, and was finally abandoned in the mid third century AD amid Gothic invasions. Coins found at the site bear the name of the Scythian king Scyles, suggesting he held some authority over the settlement. The site covers about 7 hectares and is partly submerged due to erosion of the lower terraces of the estuary.
