Tyras was an ancient Greek city on the northern coast of the Black Sea, founded by colonists from Miletus around 600 BC near the mouth of the Tyras river, now the Dniester, on the site of modern Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi in Ukraine. Governed by five archons, a senate and a popular assembly, it traded in wheat, wine and fish, was destroyed by the Getae around 50 BC, and was rebuilt by the Romans under Nero in 56 AD as part of the province of Lower Moesia, hosting a naval unit called the Classis Flavia Moesica. Coin minting ceased after the reign of Alexander Severus in 235 AD, and the Romans abandoned the city in the late fourth century AD following Gothic attacks.
