Carlisle

Carlisle is a city in the Cumberland district of Cumbria, in the North West of England, with a 2021 population of 77,730; it is the largest settlement and the only city in Cumbria. Known as the Great Border City for its position about eight miles south of the Scottish border, it began as the Roman fort of Luguvalium, built to support Hadrian's Wall. Carlisle Castle made the city a significant military stronghold through the medieval period, and a priory founded in the early 12th century became Carlisle Cathedral in 1133, giving the city its official status. Textile manufacturing transformed Carlisle into a mill town during the Industrial Revolution, and it later grew into a major railway hub, with as many as seven different railway companies once operating through Carlisle railway station.
