Cunetio

Cunetio was a large walled town in a valley of the River Kennet in what is now Wiltshire, England. Romano-British people occupied the site from the 2nd century AD, and the settlement was abandoned in the early 5th century, during the emerging post-Roman period. It lay near the modern village of Mildenhall, about 1.5 miles east of the market town of Marlborough. Scholars were unaware of the site until it was rediscovered from aerial photographs in the 1940s. Subsequent archaeological excavation revealed a substantial urban area defended by large masonry walls, and artifacts recovered from the site have included kitchenware, personal effects, and two hoards of Roman coinage.
