Noviomagus Reginorum

Noviomagus Reginorum was a Romano-British settlement and administrative center in what is now West Sussex, England, established shortly after the Roman invasion of Britain in AD 43 as a military winter fort for the Second Augustan Legion in the territory of the Atrebates tribe. It grew into the capital of the Civitas Reginorum, a client kingdom, and became an important residential, market and industrial center known for fine tableware and decorative metalwork, with public baths, an amphitheater and a basilica. The site was largely abandoned by the 380s, possibly due to Saxon raids, and its remains now lie beneath the medieval city of Chichester.
