Road Town, on the island of Tortola, is the capital and largest town of the British Virgin Islands, a British Overseas Territory, standing on the horseshoe-shaped Road Harbour on the island's south coast; its name comes from the nautical term for a sheltered anchorage, a road. The Wickham's Cay development, 28 hectares of reclaimed land with marina facilities, turned the town into a major yacht-chartering and tourism hub, and its oldest standing structure, the HM Prison on Main Street, dates to 1774. Its population was about 15,000 in 2018.
