Venta Icenorum

Venta Icenorum, whose name means marketplace of the Iceni, was the Roman-era capital of the Iceni tribe, located at what is now Caistor St Edmund in Norfolk, England, about five miles south of Norwich. The Iceni are best remembered for their revolt against Roman rule under queen Boudica in the winter of AD 61, though the town itself was built later, becoming the tribe's administrative capital when its streets were first paved around the first half of the 2nd century. Archaeological work beginning in 1928 and resumed by the University of Nottingham in 2009 shows it functioned as a sparsely populated frontier town focused on administration and trade, and its earthen embankments remain visible today under the care of the Norfolk Archaeological Trust.
