Wallachia is a geographical region of modern day Romania and one of the two historical Romanian principalities that helped found the modern Romanian state, lying between the Lower Danube and the Southern Carpathians. Traditionally divided into Muntenia, or Greater Wallachia, and Oltenia, or Lesser Wallachia, it consolidated as an independent principality by 1330 after the Battle of Posada and united with Moldavia in 1859 to form the basis of modern Romania.
