The buildup of a broad, gently sloping apron of sand and gravel beyond a glacier's margin, deposited by meltwater streams as they lose velocity and drop their sediment load upon leaving the confines of the ice. Outwash plains often grade seamlessly from a terminal moraine into flat, fertile lowland.
