The microbial conversion of nitrate back into inert nitrogen gas, or related nitrogen oxide gases, under low-oxygen conditions, completing the nitrogen cycle by returning fixed nitrogen to the atmosphere. It occurs widely in waterlogged soils, wetlands and low-oxygen zones of lakes and oceans, and is an important natural mechanism for removing excess nitrogen from over-enriched waters.
