A combination of frost weathering, meltwater erosion and mass movement operating beneath and around a long-lasting snow patch, gradually excavating a shallow hollow, or nivation hollow, in the ground beneath it. It is considered a precursor process to full cirque formation in mountain environments that are cold but not yet fully glaciated.
